Job Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice and risk assessments on New York and federal law to business and individual clients.
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, pleadings, motions, settlement agreements, and other legal documents.
- Represent clients in court hearings, trials, arbitrations, mediations, and administrative proceedings in Erie County and surrounding jurisdictions.
- Conduct legal research, analyze statutes, regulations, and case law, and prepare memoranda and opinion letters.
- Manage case strategy, discovery, and deadlines, coordinating with paralegals, co-counsel, and outside experts.
- Develop and maintain client relationships, participate in business development, and contribute to practice growth in the Buffalo market.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders or cross-practice teams on corporate transactions, regulatory filings, and compliance initiatives.
Minimum Requirements
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Admission to the New York State Bar, or eligibility for admission/waiver within a defined timeframe.
- 1–5+ years of relevant legal experience in litigation, corporate, real estate, criminal, or related practice areas, depending on role level.
- Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex statutes and regulations.
- Experience drafting and reviewing contracts, pleadings, or other substantive legal documents with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple matters, meet deadlines, and maintain organized case files.
- High level of professionalism, ethics, and client-service orientation, including clear written and verbal communication.
Preferred Skills
- Prior experience in a Buffalo or upstate New York law firm, corporate legal department, or government agency.
- Courtroom or deposition experience, including arguing motions, examining witnesses, or negotiating settlements.
- Industry knowledge in areas such as insurance defense, healthcare, banking, real estate development, or manufacturing.
- Familiarity with e-discovery platforms, case management systems, and online legal research tools like Westlaw or LexisNexis.
- Business development aptitude, including networking within the Western New York legal community and participation in bar associations.
