Job Responsibilities

  • Advise clients on IP strategy, portfolio development, clearance, and risk management across patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.
  • Draft, file, and prosecute patent and trademark applications, and manage office actions, oppositions, cancellations, and maintenance filings.
  • Negotiate and draft IP-intensive agreements, including license agreements, technology transfer, SaaS, development, coexistence, confidentiality, and assignment contracts.
  • Handle IP disputes, including infringement analysis, cease-and-desist letters, takedown requests, domain name disputes, and support IP litigation and enforcement actions.
  • Conduct IP due diligence for M&A, venture financing, and commercial transactions, assessing ownership, chain of title, and freedom-to-operate risks.
  • Collaborate with R&D, product, engineering, marketing, and branding teams to align IP protection with product lifecycles and go-to-market strategies.
  • Monitor legal developments in patent, trademark, and copyright law, and provide training and policies on IP protection and information security.

Minimum Requirements

  • J.D. or LL.B. from an accredited law school, with strong academic performance and coursework or focus in intellectual property law.
  • Admission to at least one state bar (or relevant jurisdiction), in good standing; registration to practice before the USPTO is preferred for patent-focused roles.
  • 1–5+ years of experience in intellectual property law at a law firm, IP boutique, or in-house legal department, depending on seniority level.
  • Solid knowledge of patent, trademark, and copyright statutes, case law, and relevant international treaties and filing systems.
  • Excellent legal research, drafting, and analytical skills, with the ability to explain complex technical and legal concepts to non-lawyers.
  • Demonstrated experience handling IP prosecution, transactional IP, or IP litigation matters within technology, life sciences, consumer products, or related industries.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple matters, deadlines, and stakeholders across jurisdictions.

Preferred Skills

  • Technical background or industry experience in software, electronics, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, media, or consumer brands.
  • Registration before the USPTO and hands-on experience with patent drafting, prior art searches, and office action responses for patent-focused positions.
  • Experience managing global IP portfolios, coordinating with foreign counsel, and using international filing systems such as the PCT and Madrid Protocol.
  • Familiarity with IP docketing and matter management tools, e-billing systems, and legal research platforms relevant to patent and trademark practice.
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally with business, product, marketing, and engineering teams, and to develop practical, business-oriented IP solutions.
