Job Responsibilities
- Advise on cross-border transactions, including M&A, joint ventures, financing, and licensing involving multiple jurisdictions.
- Draft, review, and negotiate international commercial agreements, choice of law provisions, and dispute resolution clauses.
- Represent clients in international arbitration and mediation under rules such as ICC, LCIA, ICSID, UNCITRAL, and regional centers.
- Provide guidance on international trade law, WTO rules, customs, tariffs, export controls, and economic sanctions compliance.
- Advise states, sovereign entities, and corporations on public international law, treaty interpretation, and investment protection frameworks.
- Coordinate with local counsel, internal stakeholders, and external advisors to assess multi-jurisdictional legal and regulatory risks.
- Prepare legal opinions, memoranda, and strategic briefs on human rights, ESG, anti-corruption, and cross-border enforcement issues.
Minimum Requirements
- LL.B., J.D., or equivalent law degree from an accredited institution; LL.M. in international law or related field is often preferred.
- Active license to practice law and good standing with at least one bar or law society; additional foreign qualifications are advantageous.
- 2–5+ years of post-qualification experience in international law, cross-border transactions, arbitration, or trade law, depending on seniority level.
- Strong grounding in private and/or public international law, including conflicts of law, jurisdiction, and enforcement of foreign judgments or awards.
- Proven experience drafting and negotiating complex international contracts or submissions in arbitration or international adjudicatory bodies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to advise clients and stakeholders across multiple jurisdictions and cultures.
- Professional fluency in English; additional language skills (e.g., French, Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin) may be required for certain markets.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with investor–state dispute settlement, investment treaty arbitration, or WTO and regional trade dispute proceedings.
- Familiarity with sanctions screening tools, export control compliance systems, and international regulatory tracking platforms.
- Sector experience in areas such as energy, infrastructure, finance, technology, or sovereign debt and public policy matters.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multi-country projects, coordinate cross-functional teams, and work effectively with local counsel worldwide.
- Advanced research skills using international case law databases, treaty collections, and comparative law resources, with strong analytical judgment.
