Job Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day regulatory counseling on federal and state healthcare laws, including Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statute, HIPAA and Medicare/Medicaid rules.
- Review, draft and negotiate healthcare agreements, including provider contracts, managed care agreements, clinical trial agreements and business associate agreements.
- Advise on healthcare transactions such as joint ventures, acquisitions, physician practice integrations and value-based care arrangements.
- Support compliance programs by developing policies, training materials and internal audits related to billing, coding, privacy and fraud and abuse risks.
- Assist with responses to government investigations, audits and inquiries from CMS, OIG, state Medicaid agencies and licensing boards.
- Analyze reimbursement, coverage and coding issues for new services, telehealth offerings and innovative payment models.
- Monitor regulatory changes in healthcare, digital health, telemedicine and data privacy and communicate their impact to internal stakeholders or clients.
Minimum Requirements
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Active license and good standing with at least one U.S. state bar, often with preference for the jurisdiction of practice.
- 1–3 years of relevant experience for junior roles; 5+ years for senior counsel or partner-track positions in health law or healthcare regulatory practice.
- Foundational knowledge of key healthcare statutes and regulations, including HIPAA, Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statute and Medicare/Medicaid rules.
- Experience working at a law firm, government agency, healthcare provider, insurer or in-house legal department in a health-related industry.
- Strong legal research, writing and statutory interpretation skills, particularly in administrative and regulatory law.
- Ability to communicate complex regulatory concepts clearly to non-lawyer business, clinical and compliance stakeholders.
Preferred Skills
- Experience advising hospitals, physician groups, health systems, payors or digital health companies on complex reimbursement and compliance issues.
- Familiarity with telehealth, remote patient monitoring, health IT, health data interoperability and emerging digital health business models.
- Background with government investigations, self-disclosures, internal investigations or corporate integrity agreements in the healthcare sector.
- Comfort with analyzing large volumes of regulatory guidance, advisory opinions and enforcement actions to provide practical, risk-based advice.
- Cross-functional collaboration experience with compliance, finance, clinical operations, information security and data privacy teams.
