Job Responsibilities
- Advise clients on eligibility, risks, and strategies for family-based, employment-based, and humanitarian immigration benefits.
- Prepare, review, and file immigration petitions, applications, and supporting evidence with USCIS, DOS, DOL, and other agencies.
- Represent clients in removal proceedings, bond hearings, master calendar hearings, and individual merits hearings before EOIR, where applicable.
- Conduct detailed client interviews, fact investigations, and document review to develop strong, well-documented case files.
- Track case milestones, deadlines, and requests for evidence, ensuring timely responses and compliant filings.
- Collaborate with paralegals and support staff to manage high-volume caseloads while maintaining quality and client communication.
- Stay current on changes in immigration statutes, regulations, policy memos, and federal case law impacting NYC-based clients.
Minimum Requirements
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited U.S. law school or foreign equivalent with LL.M. in U.S. law.
- Admission to at least one U.S. state bar; New York bar admission strongly preferred for NYC in-house and law firm roles.
- Demonstrated coursework, internships, clinics, or prior practice experience in immigration law or related public interest areas.
- Strong legal research, brief writing, and advocacy skills, including experience drafting motions, briefs, or legal memoranda.
- Ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously, prioritize deadlines, and work effectively with diverse, often vulnerable client populations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain complex immigration concepts in plain language.
- Willingness to appear in immigration court, attend agency interviews, or coordinate with consular posts as required by the role.
Preferred Skills
- Prior experience handling EOIR removal defense, asylum, SIJS, VAWA, U visas, or T visas in the NYC or tri-state region.
- Background in business immigration, including H-1B, L-1, O-1, TN, PERM, and corporate I-9 and compliance counseling.
- Professional proficiency in a second language common in NYC immigrant communities (e.g., Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Bengali, Russian, Arabic).
- Familiarity with immigration case management software, e-filing platforms, and document automation tools.
- Experience working in fast-paced law firm, nonprofit, or legal aid environments with high-volume immigration caseloads.
