Job Responsibilities
- Represent low-income and marginalized clients in civil matters, including intake, case assessment, counseling, and courtroom advocacy.
- Litigate cases in trial and appellate courts, including drafting pleadings, motions, briefs, and discovery, and conducting hearings or trials.
- Engage in impact litigation and policy advocacy aimed at systemic reform in areas such as civil rights, housing, immigration, and public benefits.
- Collaborate with community organizations, social workers, and service providers to deliver holistic, client-centered advocacy.
- Conduct community outreach, legal education workshops, and know-your-rights presentations for affected populations.
- Track case metrics, maintain accurate case files, and comply with funder and grant-reporting requirements.
- Stay current on substantive law and procedural changes impacting public interest practice areas, including emerging federal and state regulations.
Minimum Requirements
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Active bar admission in the relevant jurisdiction, or eligibility to sit for the bar or practice under supervision/temporary admission rules.
- Demonstrated commitment to public interest, civil rights, or legal services work through clinics, internships, fellowships, or pro bono experience.
- Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills, including experience drafting memoranda, motions, and client correspondence.
- Ability to manage a high-volume caseload, prioritize competing deadlines, and work effectively with clients facing crisis or trauma.
- Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills, with sensitivity to the needs of diverse and marginalized communities.
- Willingness to travel locally or regionally for court appearances, outreach, and collaboration with partner organizations, as required.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in one or more core public interest practice areas, such as housing, immigration, family law, consumer rights, education, disability, or environmental justice.
- Fluency or proficiency in a second language commonly spoken in the client community (e.g., Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Haitian Creole).
- Background in impact litigation, legislative advocacy, or policy analysis related to civil rights or poverty law.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed lawyering, community lawyering, or movement lawyering approaches.
- Comfort with legal practice technologies, including case management systems, document automation, and remote representation tools.
