Job Responsibilities
- Draft, review, and negotiate construction contracts, subcontracts, consultant appointments, collateral warranties, and security documents (bonds, guarantees, indemnities).
- Advise on standard form contracts (such as FIDIC, NEC, JCT, AIA or local equivalents) and tailor amendments to reflect project-specific risk allocation.
- Support procurement strategies for public and private sector infrastructure projects, including tender documentation and bid reviews.
- Manage and advise on project claims, including delay and disruption, extensions of time, variations, defects, and payment disputes.
- Handle construction dispute resolution through adjudication, mediation, arbitration, and litigation in courts or specialist forums.
- Advise on health and safety, planning, building regulations, environmental compliance, and licensing issues affecting construction projects.
- Collaborate with commercial, engineering, finance, and project management teams to provide ongoing legal support throughout the project lifecycle.
Minimum Requirements
- Qualified lawyer licensed to practice in the relevant jurisdiction, in good standing with the local bar or law society.
- Juris Doctor (JD), LLB, or equivalent law degree from an accredited institution; additional construction or engineering law coursework is an advantage.
- 1–3 years of experience for junior roles, 4–7 years for mid-level, and 8+ years for senior construction lawyer or projects counsel positions.
- Demonstrated experience with construction contracts, infrastructure projects, or real estate development transactions in private practice or in-house roles.
- Strong drafting and negotiation skills with familiarity in at least one set of standard form construction contracts (e.g., FIDIC, NEC, JCT, AIA).
- Solid understanding of dispute resolution processes, including adjudication, arbitration, and litigation, and the ability to assess claims and defenses.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal risk to non-lawyer stakeholders.
Preferred Skills
- Experience on large-scale infrastructure, energy, utilities, transport, or PPP/PFI projects with cross-border or multi-jurisdictional elements.
- Background in or exposure to technical construction issues, engineering concepts, or project management methodologies (e.g., critical path, scheduling).
- Familiarity with project finance structures, lender requirements, and interface issues between construction documentation and financing agreements.
- Proficiency with e-discovery, contract lifecycle management, and matter management tools commonly used in construction and disputes practices.
- Proven ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously, prioritize under time pressure, and work effectively with multidisciplinary project teams.
