Job Responsibilities
- Draft, review and negotiate AI development, data processing, SaaS, cloud and licensing agreements with vendors, customers and strategic partners.
- Advise on regulatory compliance related to AI and automated decision-making, including data privacy, cybersecurity, consumer protection and sector-specific regulations.
- Develop and implement AI governance frameworks, policies and ethical guidelines covering model training data, algorithmic bias, transparency and human oversight.
- Provide product counseling on the launch and ongoing operation of AI-enabled products, including risk assessments and data protection impact assessments.
- Coordinate with engineering, product, compliance and information security teams to embed legal requirements into system design, testing and deployment processes.
- Monitor and interpret evolving AI-related legislation, standards and guidance at domestic and international levels, and translate changes into practical controls.
- Manage incident response and regulatory inquiries relating to AI systems, data breaches, model failures and high-risk use cases.
Minimum Requirements
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) or equivalent law degree from an accredited institution.
- Admission to at least one bar jurisdiction in the relevant country or ability to qualify as in-house counsel.
- 2–5+ years of experience in technology transactions, data privacy, IP, fintech regulation or related practice; senior roles may require 7–10+ years.
- Demonstrated familiarity with AI, machine learning or data-intensive products, whether through client work, in-house experience or academic research.
- Solid understanding of data protection and privacy laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) and their application to AI and automated decision-making.
- Strong contract drafting and negotiation skills, particularly for SaaS, cloud, licensing and data sharing arrangements.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical and regulatory concepts to non-lawyers.
Preferred Skills
- Experience advising on AI-specific regulatory frameworks, standards and guidance (e.g., EU AI Act, algorithmic accountability and model governance rules).
- Background in computer science, data science or engineering, or significant hands-on experience working with technical teams on AI and machine learning projects.
- Familiarity with open-source licensing, IP ownership issues for training data and model outputs, and content moderation or platform liability regimes.
- Comfort using legal technology tools, contract lifecycle management platforms and AI-assisted research tools to streamline analysis and drafting.
- Experience in high-growth technology environments such as SaaS, fintech, healthtech, autonomous vehicles or cloud infrastructure providers.
