Job Responsibilities

Draft and prosecute patent applications, including preparing specifications, claims and drawings for filing with the USPTO and international patent offices.
Respond to office actions, conduct examiner interviews and manage appeal proceedings to secure strong, enforceable patent rights.
Perform prior art, freedom-to-operate, validity and infringement analyses to assess patent risk and competitive positioning.
Advise on global patent portfolio strategy, including invention harvesting, filing tactics, annuity decisions and jurisdictional coverage.
Support patent litigation, post-grant proceedings and administrative challenges, including claim construction, invalidity and non-infringement arguments.
Review and negotiate IP and technology-related agreements such as licenses, joint development agreements, NDAs and research collaborations.
Collaborate with R&D, product, engineering and business teams to align patent strategy with product roadmaps and commercialization plans.

Minimum Requirements

Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school; some roles may accept registered patent agents without a J.D. for prosecution-focused work.
Admission to at least one state bar in good standing; registration to practice before the USPTO is typically required for patent prosecution roles.
Undergraduate or advanced degree in a technical field such as electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, chemistry, biology or related discipline.
1–3 years of experience in patent drafting and prosecution for entry-level associate roles; 5+ years for senior associate or in-house counsel positions.
Strong understanding of U.S. patent law, including novelty, non-obviousness, subject matter eligibility and key procedural rules under the Patent Act and USPTO regulations.
Excellent legal writing, claim drafting and analytical skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to legal and business stakeholders.
Ability to manage multiple matters and deadlines in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail and high work quality.

Preferred Skills

Experience with international patent prosecution under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) and coordination with foreign counsel in the EU, UK, China and other key jurisdictions.
Background in high-demand technical areas such as software, AI, fintech, medical devices, biotech, pharmaceuticals or telecommunications.
Familiarity with post-grant proceedings, inter partes review (IPR), oppositions and other contested USPTO or foreign patent office processes.
Comfort with IP portfolio analytics tools, patent search platforms and docketing systems to track deadlines and evaluate competitive landscapes.
Strong business acumen, including experience integrating patent strategy into product planning, licensing, commercialization and M&A due diligence.
